"Looking good through my treatment has helped me stay positive. It’s a way of saying to my children, and to myself, that I’m going to be OK."  -  Cancer Survivor.

Launched in 1992 by a charitable foundation of the Canadian Cosmetic, Toiletry and Fragrance Association (CCTFA), Look Good Feel Better is Canada’s only cancer charity dedicated to empowering women to manage the effects that cancer and its treatment have on their appearance, and often on their morale. Over 100,000 women have been helped through our workshop and services.

At the heart of Look Good Feel Better is a free, two-hour hands-on workshop in which women whose appearance has been affected by cancer and cancer treatment learn how to look and feel a little more like themselves again. Guided by experts through our Signature Steps, they master simple cosmetic techniques, explore hair alternatives, and learn about cosmetic hygiene, nail and skin care. Participants take home a complimentary kit of cosmetics and personal care products that are generously donated by the member companies of the CCTFA.

The Look Good Feel Better workshop brings together women with cancer in a safe and supportive environment where they can share stories, insights, laughter and, yes, sometimes tears.

3 Makeup Tips for Women With Breast Cancer Treatment Side Effects PDF Print E-mail
Healthy Lifestyle - Beauty

Some women under treatment for breast cancer may wear more makeup or wear it more often to compensate for treatment side effects such as sallow skin or dark under-eye circles. Ramy Gafni, a makeup artist, creator of the DVD, The Ultimate Guide to Looking and Feeling Great While Living With Cancer (Shami Production, 2006), and a cancer survivor himself, offers these tips.

1. Try yellow-based concealer plus bronzer
If you have dark shadows under your eyes, Gafni recommends using concealer-yellow-based (not pink), because that looks the most natural. Choose a shade that either matches your skin tone or is slightly lighter. "Then add a little bronzer to get rid of sallowness or paleness in the skin, or add a rosy blush to the apples of the cheeks to give you a healthy pop of color. Keep it simple."

2. Use pencil or pomade to fill in your brows
"More than losing the hair on your head-if you're bald or have it shaved people could just think you're an artist-losing your brows and lashes are a bigger giveaway that you're going through cancer," says Gafni. If you have partial hair loss, he recommends using a pencil or pomade a shade lighter than your hair color to fill in brows. "If you have no hair [on your brows] at all, go a little darker than your hair color," he adds, noting that a wax-based brow filler, like his Miracle Brow!, will adhere better to the skin.

3. Smudge eyeliner on your lash line

"The best way to fill your lash line is to use an eyeliner-pencil, pen, or liquid, which is the hardest to work with and looks the most artificial," says Gafni. "Go as close to the lash line as possible with a brownish-black pencil or pen, but you don't need to make a perfectly straight line; it looks better if you smudge it a little bit. Do this on the upper lash line and you can do a little bit on the outer half of the lower lash line."

Women of color can use more intense colors, like a black eyeliner and a richer, burgundy blush, Gafni says.

Healthy Lifestyle - Fitness
fitnessBreast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer in Canadian women. One in every nine women in Canada will develop breast cancer during her lifetime and one in 27 will die of it. Although men also can get breast cancer, more than 100 women are diagnosed for each man afflicted.

Early stage breast cancer has an excellent prognosis, with a five-year survival rate of over 90 percent. Currently, greater than two million women in North America are breast cancer survivors.

Cancer treatment varies depending on the type and stage of cancer and the age and medical history of the patient. Treatment may include surgery (lumpectomy or mastectomy), chemotherapy, radiation, hormone therapy or a combination of these therapies.

Of course, all these treatments have side effects. Breast surgery frequently results in decreased strength and range of motion of the affected shoulder and arm. Side effects from other treatments include fatigue, nausea, pain, difficulty sleeping, lowered self-concept, anxiety and depression. Weight gain is often associated with chemotherapy as well.

Loss of Appetite PDF Print E-mail
Healthy Lifestyle - Nutrition

Loss of appetite is one of the most common complaints expressed by people with cancer. People may lose their appetite because they feel sick from treatment or because they are upset or depressed about having cancer. Unfortunately, there is no easy answer for this problem. Try each suggestion until you find those that work best for you.

  • Eat more when you feel the hungriest.
  • Get the satisfaction of finishing a meal by taking small portions. You can always go back for seconds.
  • Eat a number of small meals and snacks during the day instead of 3 large meals.
  • Have ready -to-eat snacks to nibble on such as cheese and crackers, hard boiled eggs, canned pudding, ice cream, yogurt, granola bars, muffins, nuts and seed mixtures.
  • Eat the foods you enjoy the most.
  • Eat in a pleasant atmosphere to raise your spirits. Eat with family or friends, or eat at a restaurant for a change.
  • If you have lost weight since the cancer treatment started, read Cancer and Unintentional Weight Loss for more tips to include calorie-dense food.
